Roger,

I don't think the Savage has changed too much since it's inception in 1986, except for adding a fifth gear. I have the shop manuals, with supplements, for all model years and most of the bike's important stuff is the same overall. The fifth gear is barely "taller" than the fourth but does offer a bit of extra speed etc., although others on Bert's site are happy with their four speeds. His website has lots of info on any problems Savages have, and is perfect place to research your purchase decisions. Overall, the Savage has it's flaws like any bike, but mostly odds and ends. The engine seems like a jackhammer and seems as reliable as any. The two things I like most about the Savage is there is only one cylinder to maintain, and the belt drive is a perfect, clean and quiet drive system which delivers a nice "cushion" between the engine and wheel. No greasy chains, no shaft effects, just good delivery of power to the wheel. The only think I don't like is the seat, it's too "low" in front for my 6' frame, it keeps "sliding" me into the tank. This is an easy remedy, however, with aftermarket accessories or re-upholstering etc.
I have a 1996 model and really enjoy it. I love the simple design and styling, and I really love the fact that it only weighs 352 lbs. Can't beat that for a 650 !! I'd buy one again without hesitation.

Good luck !!

Tim
